Bergen sheriff’s Quality of Life unit seizes imitation handgun, arrests brothers

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Its tail lights were out and its hazards were flashing, so officers with a special county sheriff’s detail pulled a car over in Hackensack — and found two brothers carrying pot and an imitation handgun, Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino said this afternoon.

Leroy Williams, 19, tried tipping away from the car driven by his 22-year-old brother, Carl, after the stop last Saturday night at Lafayette and Hudson streets by detectives with a Quality of Life unit, Saudino said.

The members of the unit — which includes Hackensack police officers — smelled a strong odor of raw marijuana in the car, he added.

Both brothers “admitted to possessing marijuana on them as well as in the vehicle,” Saudino said.

A search also turned up what at first appeared a .380-caliber handgun but turned out to be an imitation identical in size and shape to a Knall revolver, the sheriff said.

Both men were charged with drug and weapons possession counts.

Leroy Williams was being held on $10,000 bail and his brother on $7,500 in the Bergen County Jail. Carl Williams also received several motor vehicle summonses, Saudino said.
