Bergen sheriff: Look to Urban League for help with foreclosures

SHOUT OUT: Sheriffs are known for carrying out foreclosure sales, but Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino said that doesn’t keep him from pointing people toward alternatives to help pay their mortgages on time.

One resource, Saudino said, is the Urban League for Bergen County.

The league is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to helping economically disadvantaged residents through foreclosure counseling and mediation, among other free services.

One program in particular, the New Jersey HomeKeeper program, provides financial assistance to eligible homeowners in danger of foreclosure as a direct result of unemployment or underemployment, the sheriff said.

All assistance is provided in the form of a 0% interest rate.

Saudino temporarily suspended foreclosure sales in the wake of Huricane Sandy last year.

It’s picked up since the stay was lifted: Through July 1, foreclosure sales in Bergen County have more than quadrupled to more than 160 properties from 35 in the same period last  year.

“As law enforcement officials, it is our duty to serve and protect the common good for all people of this county,” Saudino said. “In these troubling economic times, no one should be hesitant or afraid to seek guidance.”
