Hillsdale Police Chief Chip Stalter said today that the arrest of 44-year-old Home Depot contractor Peter W. Tobin launched a “lengthy” investigation that involved Detective Sgt. Robert Francaviglia and Detective Sean Kavanagh,  as well as their counterparts in surrounding and nearby towns.

A Hillsdale resident told police in January that $6,600 worth of jewelry was missing after Tobin did work on her bathroom.

Stalter’s detectives learned that Hackensack police were eyeing Tobin for a similar crime and together they arrested him at the Home Depot in Hackensack.

They then teamed up to trace the stolen jewelry, which they recovered from a Hackensack gold buyer. Curiously, the booty included two sets of earrings not reported in either theft.

That’s because they were stolen out of Bergenfield, Stalter said.

The detectives kept going — Tobin’s bail increasing with each new charge.

They got a warrant to search his Hackensack apartment where, Stalter said, they found more hot jewelry linked to the Hillsdale and Bergenfield thefts.

Tobin remains held in the Bergen County Jail on what is now $20,500 bail, charged with burglary and theft, among other counts.
