Bergen County Police Officer Pete Flannery
Officer Pete Flannery was on his way to help a colleague at a traffic stop involving three occupants when his cruiser was struck by another vehicle at the intersection of Broadway and 54th Street late Thursday afternoon.
“His was a red light, hers was turning yellow,” a source with direct knowledge of the incident told CLIFFVIEW PILOT a short time after the crash.
“Two different civilian witnesses remained at the scene,” the source said. “Both gave detailed statements that the officer had his lights and sirens on but stopped first and then proceeded through the intersection.
“They said [the other driver] just kept going, trying to beat the light.”
A responding officer issued her more than one summons, he said.
The woman went to Valley Hospital with undetermined injuries, while Flannery was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center.
“He’s OK. He’s fine,” a colleague of Flannery’s told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
But there’s more to the story:
In Flannery’s place, a Bergen County Police K9 officer went to the scene of the initial stop, barely 100 yards up Broadway.
A source with direct knowledge of the incident told CLIFFVIEW PILOT that “during a cursory walk around the vehicle,” the canine “indicated” — a trained response to the presence of drugs.
One of the occupants was taken into custody on pending drug charges. The other two were being interviewed late this afternoon into evening, CLIFFVIEW PILOT has learned.
