Bergen man charged in two DWI deaths after van smashes pole

EXCLUSIVE REPORT: An Englewood business owner was drunk when he drove his van into a pole, killing two people, say authorities who’ve charged him with two counts of death by auto and two of assault by auto, CLIFFVIEW PILOT has learned.

Heriberto D. Calles, 50, was behind the wheel around 3 a.m. this morning after leaving a Bergenfield bar when his passenger van containing five people struck the pole at Lantana Avenue and Liberty Road in Englewood, reports show.

The two passengers who died reportedly weren’t wearing seatbelts.



A third is at Hackensack Univ
ersity Medical Center with severe injuries.

Calles, of Cottage Place, most recently owned and operated a janitorial service out of Englewood, records show. He w as still hospitalized under security for injuries he sustained in the crash. His bail is $300,000 bail.
