“It’s a very difficult time for the County Executive and a very personal matter,” Jeanne Baratta, a spokesperson for Donovan told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning. “She would appreciate people respecting her privacy and the privacy of her son.”

Brendan Donovan was issued summonses and released without bail, Rutherford Police Capt. Hal Ciser told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.

Rutherford High School Principal John Hurley summoned police just before 1:30 yesterday afternoon after “a female student who appeared under the influence suddenly left the school,” Ciser said.

The commander said he dispatched officers to search for her. Within 20 minutes, however, she turned up and was taken to the school nurse’s office with another girl, he said.

That teen appeared under the influence, as well, he said.

One of them also had her own stash of Xanax, which both apparently had ingested, the captain added.

The parents of both were notified, and the girls — one 16, the other 17 — were taken by ambulance to Hackensack University Medical Center, Ciser said.

“Both of them were very lethargic,” he said. “One was lethargic, but to a point.”

The girls told police they’d been smoking pot with Donovan at the county executive’s house after he picked them up earlier, Ciser said.

“Due to the nature of their conditions, we determined we should send an officer to his house to check on his well-being,” the captain told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Donovan, who lives there with his mother, “admitted he was with them and smoked with them,” Ciser said.

Besides giving Donovan the summonses, police issued delinquent complaints to the juveniles, he said.

Ciser said that both girls appeared OK after being checked out at the hospital.
