Yesterday’s noontime crash backed up Route 4 eastbound for hours.

A 1999 Mercury Sable occupied by two women came off the shoulder, narrowly missing a Bergen County Police cruiser, as BCPD K9 Officer Les Lorenc investigated a hit-and-run accident there.

The Sable then plowed into the back of the tow truck there to tow away the struck vehicle, Lt. Robert Espinosa said.

The flatbed sheared off the roof of the car, which got jammed in underneath, he said.

Lorenc climbed over the tow truck and through the windshield to help the severely injured driver.

Teaneck firefighters and EMS responded and cut out both occupants, who were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center.

“The ER doctor stated that if it weren’t for [Officer] Lorenc’s quick and decisive life-saving actions, the driver could have possibly [died],” Espinosa said.

The tow truck driver and passenger in the Mercury sustained minor injuries, the lieutenant said.

Police are investigating.
