Joseph A. Obiedzinski (MUGSHOT: Bergen County Prosecutor)
Joseph A. Obiedzinski was released on $25,000 bail, pending a Municipal Court hearing this afternoon.
He is charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury, as well as reckless driving and an additional count of leaving the scene of an accident, records show.
The Rutherford High School graduate and apprentice with Pipefitters Local 274 works with a 10-year-old tree service business on Riverview Avenue. He also plays and referees roller hockey.
Around 11:30 p.m. last Tuesday, 44-year-old Zoila Diaz was struck by a 1990 Jeep Comanche pickup that authorities said was driven by Obiedzinski. Responding officers found her body in the middle of the street near the intersection of East Passaic Avenue and Meadow Road, Molinelli and Ciser said.
Diaz remains in critical condition Hackensack University Medical Center, they said.
“It is believed that Ms. Diaz was walking north across [East Passaic Avenue] when she was struck by a vehicle that was making a left turn onto East Passaic Avenue from the northbound lane of Meadow Road,” the two said in a join release issued by Molinelli this morning. “Ms. Diaz was then thrown to the ground, where it is believed that she was run over by the vehicle.”
Authorities got the word out while collecting evidence at the scene and nearby.
“As a result of those efforts, investigators received information which identified a truck, which was known to be owned and operated by Joseph Obiedzinski, as a suspect vehicle in the collision,” the release says.
Then, on Friday, it says, investigators determined Obiedzinski had been behind the wheel.
