The girl was 16 — the age of consent in New Jersey — when Officer Justin Krapels found her with David J. Clarke, 27, authorities told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The officer collected information that was then passed to Detective Sgt. Vincent Aiello, who found evidence of a sexual relationship beginning while the girl was 15, they said.

Clarke was taken into custody in Dutchess County and extradited to New Jersey earlier this week.

He was being held in the Bergen County Jail, charged with sexual assault and child endangerment.

A July 21 arraignment in Central Municipal Court in Hackensack was scheduled.
