Officers Gregg Hooper and Ben Fox responded to a fraud-in-progress alert from the Sephora store on March 1, Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg told CLIFFVIEW PILOT at the time. Ehrenberg said Charles T. Thompson was trying to return items he bought earlier in the day in Willow Grove, PA.

Store employees recognized Thompson as having bought items with counterfeit money four months earlier, the chief said.

As the officers questioned him, Thompson lashed out, spraining Hooper’s hand and Fox’s arm and elbow, Ehrenberg said. Both were later treated at the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood.

Police initially charged Thompson with resisting arrest and aggravated assault. He posted $75,000 bail and was released from the Bergen County Jail three days later.

A grand jury indictment returned last week charges Thompson with “knowing or recklessly” causing injury to both officers, “purposely preventing or attempting to prevent” them from doing their jobs “by means of intimidation, force, violence or physical interference,” and altering a $100 bill “to make it appear to be rare and of a higher value,” in addition to the credit card fraud counts.

These include possessing personal identification belonging to 10 or more people.
