Joseph Micalizzi, a 23-year-old junior from Freehold who was studying mechanical engineering, died at University Hospital just after 5 a.m., less than two hours after he was shot during a robbery in the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity house, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.
"This is a tragic time for the student's family, friends and the entire NJIT campus and we extend our thoughts and prayers to all affected," NJIT President Joel Bloom said.
Both the school and the prosecutor's office each posted $10,000 in reward money.
A woman who spoke on condition of anonymity told Nj.com that the killer followed Micalizzi back to the dorm from a local convenience store.
Anyone with information that could help the investigation was asked to call the Essex County Prosecutor's Office tips line: (877) 847-7432.
