1st 'Brian Beutel Battle Of Blue' For Tomorrows Children Tips In Hackensack

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- This year's 17th annual Battle of the Blue police basketball tournament at FDU in Hackensack this March will have extra meaning for the Tomorrows Children's Fund and the participiants.

It will be called by its new name: "Brian Beutel Battle of the Blue," in memory of the popular Bergen County Sheriff's lieutenant who collapsed during last year's tourney and later died.

"Brian was the epitome of a true TCF Angel and we acknowledge all of his hard work and dedication, throughout his many years as the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office’s Battle of the Blue team representative," Susan Garbe, the TCF administrative director, told Daily Voice.

"We will continue this amazing event not only to honor Brian’s Legacy but to continue to help all of the young children battling cancer," she said.

Sixteen teams will participate in the March 16 tournament, beginning at 5 p.m. in the Rothman Center.

They will play elimination rounds until one team remains.

Entrants include the Bergen and Passaic county sheriff's offices, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and police from Bergenfield, Englewood, Fort Lee, Hackensack, Passaic, Paterson, Teaneck and the Port Authority, among others.

The evening also includes auction items, raffles, refreshments and other contests for fans.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children and are being pre-sold by Tomorrows Children’s Fund and participating police departments (They also will be sold at the door).
