Bergen County Gets Pet-Saving Disaster Relief Trailer

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Bergen County Animal Response Team has teamed up with American Kennel Club Reunite, the nation’s largest non-profit pet identification and recovery service, to bring a life-saving pet disaster relief trailer to Bergen County -- the first in New Jersey.

The CART trailer "will be prepared to roll out help to pets and their owners in need if the unthinkable ever takes place," AKC Reunite said Tuesday in a release.

The trailer will be unveiled to the public during Wednesday's 4:30 p.m. Bergen County Freeholder work session at 1 Bergen Plaza in Hackensack.

The CART trailer houses supplies that create a safe, temporary home-base for at least 65 pets immediately after a disaster is declared.

Materials can be used at co-location shelters where people evacuate with their pets, or at stand-alone emergency animal shelters for displaced animals.

And it won't cost taxpayers a dime, Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco noted.

The purchase was made possible by more than $22,000 in donations and grants from the New Jersey Federation of Dog Clubs, Ramapo Kennel Club, Taconic Hills Kennel Club, Somerset Hills Kennel Club, the Doberman Pinscher Club of the Tappan Zee, The Northern New Jersey Great Dane Club, the Eastern German Shorthaired Pointer Club, the United States Australian Shepherd Association, the Spinone Club of America, the Newfoundland Club of America, the English Setter Association of America, the American Bullmastiff Association, the Field Spaniel Society of America and AKC Reunite.
