Grewal of Glen Rock will serve in the position until the state Legislature confirms him, a source with direct knowledge of the situation told Daily Voice.
Christie, a Republican who was once the U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, in 2013 nominated Grewal of that office to replace Molinelli, a Democrat from Woodcliff Lake. The state Senate never acted and the nomination lapsed.
Then, this past October, the governor's office contacted Molinelli and told him he was being replaced after 14 years in the office.
An acting appointment must be made by the state attorney general.
Molinelli made clearing cold cases a focus of his tenure after taking the job in 2002. More recently, he attacked the heroin epidemic by pairing punishment with treatment. His office also has pursued child predators.
