January Is Mentor Month For Hackensack Volunteer Center

HACKENSACK, N.J. --- The Bergen Volunteer Center, headquartered in Hackensack, will once again commemorate January as the 14th annual National Mentoring Month.

January is National Mentoring Month, and the Volunteer Center of Bergen County will recognize it by offering specialized training to new volunteer mentors -- an important and rewarding way to make a contribution to your community.

“To be a mentor, you don’t need any special skills — just an ability to listen and to offer friendship, guidance and encouragement to a child or an adult," Volunteer Center CEO Lynne Algrant said.

“And you’ll be amazed by how much you’ll get out of the experience."

The Bergen Volunteer Center is an affiliate of the Hands On Network and has been sponsoring mentoring programs for over 30 years.

Men and women ages 18 and up are needed to mentor increasing needs in several community sectors.

Caring men and women provide guidance, friendship and support to abused and neglected children ages 5 to 18 through the Mentoring Youth Program.

There is an especially great need for male mentors and bi-lingual, Spanish speaking mentors of both sexes.

“Be someone who matters to someone who matters,” said Algrant. “Share what you know and become a mentor, because ‘Mentoring Works!’”

Winter training starts January 27 for Mentoring Youth volunteers, and February 1 for bi-lingual Spanish speaking women and Mentoring Moms.

Guest mentors or mentees share their experiences to give background and knowledge. All mentors undergo a comprehensive screening process.

Trainings are being held at the Volunteer Center, 64 Passaic St., Hackensack, from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Both sessions will also be held again in the spring.

The Bergen Volunteer Center strengthens the community by connecting people through service and developing civic leaders.
