Rashell Adams and Gerardo Velazquez were honored for their contributions to the program and the community.
These two young adults spoke to an audience of 150 volunteers and community leaders about their experiences and how they have become mentors in their own right after years of support from caring adults who helped guide their paths.
"Ronnie [her mentor] helped me become a better person by believing in me when I didn't believe in myself," Adams said.
Roger Monaco, mentor to Velazquez, describes him as a strong force in his life and the reason Velazquez now believes he can achieve any goal he sets for himself.
Because mentoring was so powerful for these young adults, they have been facilitating the training of adult mentors working with at-risk children and youth throughout Bergen County.
Mentoring Youth is designed to provide our community’s most vulnerable children with a trusted adult committed to helping him/her take steps to achieve a brighter future.
The program recruits, trains, supports and supervises mentors to ensure they have the tools necessary to positively impact the lives of children impacted by abuse, neglect or other trauma.
