HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Bergen Volunteer Center, based in Hackensack, hosts Family Volunteer Day each spring to bring families together for a good cause -- and this year it's Sunday, May 22.
"Families of all shapes, sizes and ages will work together to strengthen family relationships and teach kids such values as kindness, empathy and respect for others," organizers note. "More importantly, it teaches them that happiness is not dependent on what we have. Families can give their time and talent to those in need and show kids that you as a family value community service."
Organizers advise to wear plenty of sunscreen, comfortable shoes and clothes you don't mind potentially getting dirty.
Pre-registration is required. There's a $5 fee for 3-year-olds and up -- but the event includes lunch, refreshments and an event t-shirt. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Fresh Roots Educational Farm, in Mahwah.
