It may have been during a hospital stay, a doctor’s appointment, or a hospice visit. Hopefully, we remembered to say thank you. National Nurses Week 2016 (May 6-12) gives everyone another chance to say thanks.
“At the Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative in Hackensack, we are able to provide free primary medical care to working, low-income Bergen County residents who have no health insurance,” said Neil Abitabilo, the initiative's board chair. “But it largely happens because of so many dedicated volunteers.”
"In addition to volunteer physicians, social workers, dietitians and the administrative team, we are immensely proud of the 33 nurses and nurse practitioners who love their profession – and their patients – enough to donate their time and talent,” said Amanda Missey, the initiative's president and CEO.
One prime example is Terry Adelgais, RN, who has been a volunteer for almost seven years. She is a mainstay on Tuesday mornings, and her many years of nursing experience translate to excellent patient care. She also introduces potential nurse volunteers to th initiative's practice. She reviews credentials, provides orientation, and actively mentors the nurses as they begin serving.
“We need volunteers to keep our Center functioning, and Terry is a vital team member,” said Michelle Kaye, nurse manager. “I depend on her guidance to our new nurses and her experience as a nurse leader.”
Licensed professionals are invited to learn more about the type of health care provided and the initiative's “Culture of Caring,” by visiting bvmi.org. The Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative Healthcare Center, a state-licensed ambulatory care facility, is at 241 Moore St., Hackensack.
