The BCPS was formed in 2012 by the county and a number of its public entities seeking to leverage bulk purchasing power to save on third-party electricity and natural-gas supply costs.

"Vendors came in with aggressive bids on the terms and conditions that our team worked diligently to devise," said Novelli. "Our participants have a comprehensive agreement in place, and the savings look to be substantial. We're very pleased."

BCPS participating members include the County of Bergen, county and municipal housing authorities, municipalities and public libraries -- 22 entities in all. They are projected to realize an aggregate savings in excess of $1.4 million over the course of the two-year electricity supply contract garnered through this process.

Novelli pointed out that the cooperation of these members was vital to the successful execution of the project. "We're extremely grateful to all BCPS participants for their patience and collaboration, and we are looking forward to achieving positive results again when we put the natural gas out to bid."

The county is currently working on bid specifications for the procurement of third-party natural gas supply for the BCPS, which they expect will produce a similar reduction in public spending on energy costs. Further, they are hoping to expand BCPS membership and will be contacting all public entities in the county about joining them in this effort.

"The anticipated aggregate savings on electricity supply cost is over 14 percent," Novelli said. "We think this is very compelling and will be writing to all of our public bodies, not just municipalities, to invite them to join us moving forward."

Interested parties should contact Tom Murphy, director of Community Transportation for Bergen County, to discuss the program at 201-336-3380.
