The resolution, consisting of about $3.5 million in grants to 64 municipalities and agencies, aim to improve parks and recreation facilities and preserve historic sites in Bergen County. More than 50 Bergen County municipalities will receive open space awards, primarily in the form of field, playground, and park improvements
The Borough of Fair Lawn will receive $37,542 to construct an 18-hole miniature golf course at Columbus Terrace Park next to the Dobrow Sports Complex on Harristown Road, as well as money for several historic preservation projects. The Naugle House, a historic Colonial house on Dunkerhook Road adjacent to Saddle River County Park, will receive $131,226 for various construction and renovation projects. The Garretson Forge and Farm, a Bergen County historic site received money to help replace its roof. The Colonial homestead, which also houses a working farm, is listed on the National and State Historic registries.
Other projects include a grant to build a community garden at Centennial Park in Emerson, and a grant to install a splash pad and water attraction for summer visitors to Votee Park in the Teaneck.
In Paramus, $37,542 was awarded to a project that will build an ADA-accessible playground at Petruska Park, allowing children with disabilities to enjoy the facilities.
“This year’s municipal Open Space awards have some really exciting projects,” said Freeholder Chairman Steve Tanelli, who serves as the board's liaison to the Open Space Committee. “For example, this year in my hometown of North Arlington we will be able to make some much-needed improvements to our Little League Field that will bring the field into compliance with national standards and expand our ability to host official Little League tournaments. This is just one of a number of projects included in this resolution to make improvements to parks and historic sites all over Bergen County.”
The Open Space Trust Fund, established in 1998, is a dedicated program supporting open space acquisition and recreation development, floodplain protection and historical and farmland preservation throughout Bergen County.
