Woman Deliberately Set Rutherford Garden Apartment Fire, Authorities Charge
A woman remained held Tuesday after authorities charged her with deliberately igniting a fire in the kitchen of a garden apartment in the Rutherford complex where she lives. Mary Anne Hampl, 62, was arrested shortly after 7 p.m. last Thursday, Feb. 8, after borough firefighters doused the Hastings Avenue blaze, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said. Hampl, who Musella said is unemployed, is accused of intentionally creating a fire and smoke condition with items purposefully placed on a stove. The prosecutor didn't suggest a possible motive. Boy Seized With BB Gun At Rutherford HS Playoff Game
A 17-year-old boy who apparently thought it was a good idea to bring a BB gun to Rutherford High School's state playoff game against visiting Hanover Park was quickly taken into custody, authorities said. The Friday night lights made it easy for a concerned citizen to see the weapon, which the boy pulled from his waistband to show other fans near the end of the Nov. 3 game, Rutherford Police Chief John Russo said. A stolen car chase from Belleville to Rutherford before dawn Sunday ended with a fiery crash and two arrests, authorities said. Three occupants bailed out of the stolen SUV and fled into a nearby residential area following the crash on eastbound Route 3 just west of Orient Way shortly before 1:30 a.m. Oct. 30, the witnesses said. Benches cleared and fans ran onto the field during a brawl that canceled the varsity football game Saturday between St. Mary and Harrison high schools in Rutherford before halftime. A crane clipped the bottom of a group of signs that hang over Route 3 in East Rutherford on Monday, scattering debris and closing lanes. Rutherford police sought the public's help finding the driver of an SUV that struck a pedestrian on a residential street Wednesday morning in what may have been more than an accident. SNOUT OUT: Rutherford police have added specially-designed oxygen masks for pets to their life-saving equipment. At-home pet services provider Canine Company donated three masks in response to a request by police Sgt. Julie Ann Zeigler. The cone-shaped resuscitation masks are designed for a pet’s snout, which human masks don’t fit. Each set includes masks in three sizes to fit a range of pets, from small mammals to giant breed dogs.
