An off-duty nurse helped save the life of a 69-year-old bicyclist who was knocked unconscious in a fall at a Bergen County park, authorities said. Jacqueline Polentarutti was conducting CPR when Glen Rock and Paramus police and Bergen County sheriff's officers arrived at the bike path in Saddle River County Park near the Paramus border last Wednesday, Aug. 2. Lifeless is how Kerri Burghardt described an 8-year-old girl who was pulled from the Ridgefield community pool Saturday afternoon. Seconds matter in situations like that, the 34-year-old South Hackensack mom knew. "Normally, when they blow an airhorn for an emergency, the child they pull out is paddling," said Burghardt, a nurse at St. Mary's General Hospital in Passaic. Sometimes the fates are in your favor: When the heart of a spectator at a Paterson girls softball game stopped beating, one of the first to rush to the fallen woman's aid was one of the coaches -- city firefighter John Molina. Also there in seconds was another spectator, Washington Griffin -- a retired Paterson police lieutenant. Together, the veterans of Paterson's bravest and finest -- "real-life superheroes," Mayor Andre Sayegh called them -- revived the 50-year-old grandmother.
