End Of An Era: Longtime Essex County Sheriff Not Seeking Re-Election After 34 years, there's going to be a new sheriff in town in Essex County. Armando Fontoura, who was appointed sheriff in 1990 and been elected to 10 terms is not seeking re-election, a spokesperson for the Essex County Sherriff's Office said.  Fontoura is the longest tenured sheriff in Essex County history. Prior to becoming sheriff, Fontoura was a teacher in the Newark public school system and later a Newark police officer, achieving the rank of captain and serving as chief assistant to the police director. Drug Buyer Attacks Detectives, Out-Of-Town Dealer Caught With Loaded Gun: Passaic Sheriff A 50-year-old man who was busted buying drugs from a Little Ferry driver in Paterson fought with Passaic County sheriff's officers before he was subdued, authorities said. The dealer who sold him the drugs, they said, is an ex-con who had a gun in his car. Both are now facing serious charges. Wanted Robber, Sex Offender, Others Captured By Passaic Sheriff's Fugitive Squad Seven fugitives wanted on outstanding warrants were captured by Passaic County sheriff's officers during a two-day sweep, authorities said. Members of the Fugitive Warrant Division conducted the sweep, assisted by their colleagues from the Bureau of Narcotics, uniformed patrol division, ERT, K9 and others, Passaic Sheriff Richard H. Bureau of Narcotics members looking to arrest Detravio Saylor, 36, for an earlier drug deal stopped him as he drove from his Prospect Park apartment on North 6th Street to the Paterson border, Passaic County Sheriff Richard Bernik said.
