Video: Boys Charged With Starting Fire That Ravaged Vacant Garfield Home

GARFIELD, N.J. -- Two boys -- one 13, the other 15 -- started a fire Tuesday that ravaged the upper floor of a vacant Garfield home, police said Thursday.

No one was injured in the Schley Street blaze, which firefighters initially told Daily Voice was apparently set on the second floor around 3:45 p.m.

Police were responding to a call “reporting two juveniles on the rear roof” of the residence when the fire broke out, Capt. Darren Sucorowski said.

Officer Mariggi Lopez saw one of them on the roof above the first floor and ordered him down, then called out for the other, Sucorowski said.

Both complied, he said.

Neither was injured, the captain added.

Garfield firefighters doused the blaze.

The Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification collected evidence and Garfield detectives, along with members of the county prosecutor’s Arson Investigation Unit, investigated.

Juvenile complaints were being prepared against the boys, who were released to their parents, Sucorowski said.
