Surveillance Photo Leads To Arrest In Garfield Store Robberies

GARFIELD, N.J. -- Garfield police arrested a Newark man who they said robbed a convenience store in early June after holding up a tavern around the corner a week earlier.

Detectives investigating the June 7 robbery of $2,500 from the Corner Store on Jewell Street by a man who threatened to have a gun discovred a similar holdup of $1,500 from Bogie's Bar and Liquor Store on May 30, Lt. Richard Uram said Tuesday.

The release of a surveillance photo produced tips that led to an arrest warrant for 33-year-old Matthew A. Garcia, who Uram said turned himself in at plice headquarters on Monday.

Garcia was being held on $100,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with two counts of first-degree armed robbery.
