Murdoch versus Google: Mismatch?

Rupert Murdoch versus Google? In reality, it is Microsoft trying to manipulate Murdoch into entering the ring to take a pummeling.

Speaking at a two-day meeting hosted by the Federal Trade Commission, Murdoch said newspapers “need to do a better job of persuading consumers that high-quality, reliable news and information does not come free.”

“Good journalism is an expensive commodity,” he insisted.

Isn’t this an oxymoron? Why are the tabloids making so much money?

I understand the problem. Murdoch is pissed because other sites are stealing his stories and he is losing ad revenue. I would be pissed, too. In fact, I did have my website content stolen once and I was none too pleased.

But instead of blaming Google, Murdoch can buy a program for $50 that would lock down his newspaper sites and keep his content free from theft.

Rupert is old, well read, with lots of money and lots of assistants and advisors. I guess they all missed the PBS special years ago when Bill Gates said people should pay for online content.

So how did that work out for Mr. Gates? Disney tried that with “Go.” How much is MSN charging these days? How much is “Go” and where did it go? How is AOL doing?

Google recently announced that it will let publishers set a limit on the number of articles people can read for free through its search engine.

But content should be free! Look at Linux.

Murdoch should be using his millions to hire smarter professionals to help him monetize his newspapers.

Or he could hire me for free. I’ll simply charge him a percentage of the money we make.

Given that he already has billions, maybe it’s better than I  reduce my risk and take an advance.
