Officers responding to a 6:30 p.m. on Union Street dispute were talking with a woman at the home when they were approached by Michael Stellato, 31, who had his hands in his pockets, Lt. Robert Salerno said. Two officers asked Stellato to show his hands and he refused, Salerno said. They then noticed he had a knife in his pocket and tried to take it, the lieutenant said. That's when Stellato punched one of them, he said.

He was quickly subdued and arrested, Salerno said.

The woman told the officers that Stellato had broken into her apartment and sat a couch holding a knife in a "threatening manner," the lieutenant said.

An argument followed, and Stellato threw the knife, hitting her in the back, she told police.

Stellato was being held on $50,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with two counts of aggravated assault, several illegal weapons charges, resisting arrest, burglary and trespassing.
