Howard Stern sidekick Artie Lange nailed for DWI

Mere weeks after turning the initial episode of Joe Buck’s show into a train wreck, Howard Stern sidekick Artie Lange was charged with DWI after a Jersey Shore fender bender.

Police said Lange, 41, was driving a leased 2009 Nissan Sentra around 1:30 p.m. yesterday when it rear-ended a car — with two 18-year-old men inside — that had stopped to make a turn. Police took Lange to headquarters and released him with a summons a few hours later, pending a July 16 Municipal Court date.

Lange, who has homes in Hoboken and Roseland, is charged with driving under the influence and careless driving. No injuries were reported.

Police said Lange was a “complete gentleman” and “very cooperative” — which is ironic considering how he chewed up Buck. Most people saw Lange go off on the live cable broadcast, but what upset HBO executives most was a rant that followed during the online-only overtime portion of the show afterwards (To see it, click here: Lange berates Buck).

HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg recently said he regrets not cutting Lange’s microphone.

“We should have had one of those old-style hooks or, as Joe said, a trapdoor. Probably we should have kicked him off,” Greenburg told USA Today. “In retrospect, we certainly should never have let that overtime segment happen. That magnified it. Looking back at the actual show it wasn’t nearly as disastrous as the overtime. That became fodder for the Internet, so that magnified the problem.”

“Maybe he was just trying to prop himself up and get himself some headlines. I think that was one of his goals,” Greenburg said. “He succeeded there.”

Lange fired back on Stern’s show, cursing out Greenburg. “I don’t care how important you are in this business,” he said, adding that the HBO president urged him to “go nuts” if the show got boring.

Lange has booked a benefit signing tonight at the Toms River branch of the Ocean County Library of his book, “Too Fat to Fish.” (Write your own punchline.)
