GARFIELD, N.J. — Garfield police are looking forward to operating out of a new, state-of-the-art facility.

Until then, they'll work from a warehouse on Belmont Avenue that's currently being renovated.

Garfield officials last May approved a $7 million bond ordinance to demolish the Midland Avenue facility and build a new one on the same lot, reports.

Developer James Demetrakis has donated $2.8 million toward that amount, the article says.

The entire project is expected to be complete in less than two years, Capt. Ron Polonkay told Daily Voice.

Some of the $7 million is going toward renovating temporary space on Belmont Avenue, formerly occupied by drum manufacturer Latin Percussion, the captain said.

The first floor of the building is being reconstructed to include holding cells, an indoor sally-port for a police car that leads directly to a processing room for prisoners and a separate area for the general public, Polonkay said.

Polonkay hopes to move some of his officers into the office space on the second floor of the Belmont Avenue warehouse sometime next week.

The rest of the department is expected to follow when construction is complete at the end of February, he said.
