GARFIELD, N.J. -- Theranda Jashari of Garfield, a 2016 graduate of Bergen Community College, has earned the $40,000-a-year Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship.

Jashari is one of only 75 U.S. students to receive the award, the nation’s largest private scholarship for transfer students.

As a Cooke scholar, Jashari will receive up to $40,000 a year to complete a bachelor’s degree at a four-year college or university, and can receive up to $50,000 for up to four years of graduate school, as well.

“Community Colleges remain focused on helping students achieve success,” BCC President B. Kaye Walter said. “Students like Theranda Jashari exemplify these efforts.”

The award caps a two-year tenure at BCC for Jashari, who began at the institution in 2013, shortly after emigrating from the Republic of Kosovo.

In just the last nine months, Jashari was among only 100 U.S. students to receive the 2015 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar award, and also earned a spot on the all-state academic team.

Jashari graduated from BCC on May 19.

She expects to attend Rutgers University this fall to pursue a degree in biotechnology.

Jashari is the fifth BCC student in three years to be named a Cooke scholar.

Previous recipients include 2015 valedictorian Mariia Alibekova, 2014 valedictorian Maria De Abreu Pineda, Natasha Pineiros and Ana Parra Vera.

The Cooke Foundation, a private, independent foundation that supports high achieving students with financial need, has awarded $147 million in scholarships and $90 million in grants since the year 2000.
