During the fundraisers in Lodi and Ramsey, community leaders volunteered to bag groceries for customers, as ShopRite associates collected monetary donations.

All the proceeds from the events are earmarked to help fill the shelves of food banks and charities.

"We thank our customers and community leaders for joining with us in the fight against hunger," said Lawrence Inserra Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of the family-owned grocery store chain.

"At Inserra Supermarkets, we remain steadfast in our commitment to provide support for the local food pantries and hunger-relief charities in our communities. It's exactly what my grandfather did when he opened our first store decades ago and it's what my family will always continue to do."

Every September, in recognition of National Hunger Awareness Month, Inserra Supermarkets participates in ShopRite Partners in Caring's "Help Bag Hunger" events.

Since ShopRite Partners in Caring was begun in 1999, more than $40 million has been donated to more than 1,700 charities in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Those include local food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, child care centers, battered women's shelters, senior citizens programs, drug rehab centers, programs for the mentally and physically disabled, after-school programs and other organizations that aid those in need.
