The NYPD has shared a video of its aviation unit tracking a New Jersey car thief in Manhattan. Just after pilots finish explaining how technology inside of the helicopter assists police work, they're notified of a felony vehicle — a white BMW with New York plates on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, on Monday, Feb. 26. They follow the vehicle from the air as it sits in traffic on the Belt Parkway. A philosophy professor from Hasbrouck Heights who authorities said planned to burn down St. Patrick's Cathedral died by suicide last week, nearly a month after being released from Rikers Island amid the coronavirus outbreak. A judge ordered Marc Lamparello, 38, to participate in an outpatient program at Bergen New Bridge Medical Center after releasing him on March 20 as part of an effort to stem the rapid spread of COVID-19 through the city jail system. UPDATE: The body of an internationally-recognized AIDS researcher and activist who drowned during the next-to-last-leg of a 120-mile marathon was recovered from the Hudson River, authorities confirmed. A kayaker alerted the NYPD after spotting the body of Charles Van der Horst, 67, of Chapel Hill, NC Tuesday morning, they said. It was brought to the Dyckman Street Boat Marina.
