North Jersey Sheraton Hotel Closes After Nearly 40 Years
The last guests have checked out. The Sheraton Hotel in Mahwah, which opened in 1986, officially shut its doors on Thursday, Dec.14, to be replaced by two warehouses at the 1 International Blvd. site. The 22-story hotel was the tallest structure in the township. "It's been a big part of our town for 37 years," Mayor Jim Wysocki said. "I was here when it was built. It was part of our family." A diesel exhaust fluid tank ripped open when yet another tractor-trailer jackknifed overnight Tuesday on a notorious stretch of Route 287 near the New York State border in Mahwah, closing that side of the highway once more. "When is enough enough?" Mahwah Mayor Jim Wysocki asked. It was around 2:30 a.m. Aug. 15 when the Target rig went wrong on northbound Route 287 near mile marker 64. : Tractor-Trailer Splits In Pieces, Lands On Car On Route 17
UPDATE: Northbound Route 17 in Mahwah was reopened around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday following a wild tractor-trailer crash earlier in the day. Only one lane of the southbound highway was open during the evening rush. A highly decorated and widely respected law enforcement veteran was sworn to office as Mahwah’s 9th police chief in the township’s nearly 80-year history. Mahwah residents beamed proudly as a township Girl Scout unveiled the Little Free Library she'd designed in a local park late last month. They were equally distressed when someone vandalized it this past weekend. UPDATE: The body of a drowned paddle boarder was recovered from a Mahwah lake Tuesday afternoon, responders said. The body of the 24-year-old victim from Mountainside Avenue was found in 15 feet of water shortly before 3 p.m. He wasn't immediately identified by name. The boarder had lost his grip and fell into Dators Pond at the foot of Stag Hill Road early Thursday evening, responders said.
