The jogger -- believed to be in his 50s to early 60s -- stopped and hunched over, then grabbed his chest and collapsed on the running track in Riverside County Park North around 9 a.m. May 3, Detective Lt. Two people who had passed out brought police to the Stephen Crane Elderly Apartments on Evergreen Lane around 5:40 a.m., Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said. Firefighters determined that carbon monoxide was being emitted from a furnace in the building. Thomas Martins, who had Down syndrome, died of the virus on April 6. His mom, Carolyn Martins-Reitz -- a graphic designer for the Archdiocese of Newark -- passed away March 28 at Clara Maas Medical Center. Surviving them are Reitz' husband and Martins step-dad Rudy Reitz, who mourns alone with his daughter -- Martins' half-sister -- Sharon Reitz.
