Irate Smoke Shop Customer Impersonates Detective, Had Airsoft Guns, Crystal Meth: Mahwah PD
A Mahwah smoke shop customer had two airsoft guns in his car, a holster in his waistband and some crystal meth on him when he claimed to be a police detective during a dispute with the owner, authorities said.
Officers who responded to the Hypnotic Smoke Shop on Franklin Turnpike around 9:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6, spoke with the owner and the irate customer, Capt. Guido Bussinelli said.
Gustavo Gonzalez Jr., 24, of Monroe, NY, apparently had tried to pay for merchandise with credit card numbers and not an actual card, the captain said.

Scam ALERT: 'Traveler' Busted In Attempted $15K Driveway Repair Ripoff In Upper Saddle River
A transient was arrested after scamming an Upper Saddle River homeowner out of $2,000 and then demanding $13,000 more, authorities said.
William Connors, 50, solicited the work from a resident on the north side of town by offering "leftover materials from a nearby job," USR Police Capt. Edward Kane said.
Connors got a $2,000 down payment for the fraud on Wednesday, Oct. 4, then returned to the victim's home on Thursday and insisted on $13,000 more, the captain said.
The driveway had to be entirely replaced as a result, Kane noted.

Stolen Car Left In Flames On Route 80, Trio Captured By Njsp, Teaneck PD
A young trio was captured by New Jersey State Police troopers and Teaneck police after they left a stolen car engulfed in flames on Route 80, authorities said.
An intense search began after troopers found the fully engulfed Chevy Cruze, reported stolen out of Jersey City, on the westbound highway near milepost 69 at 7:40 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, NJSP Sgt. First Class Philip Curry said.
Teaneck firefighters doused the blaze.
Troopers snatched up two of the fleeing occupants and Teaneck police nabbed the third, the sergeant said.

Fleeing Driver Nabbed After Crashing Off Route 17: Saddle River PD
A driver from Rockland County who sped off from a Route 17 stop and crashed moments later was captured on foot miles away, Saddle River police said.
John N. Papain, 37, of Suffern, was pulled over on the northbound highway shortly after 1:30 a.m. Monday, July 17, Saddle River Police Chief Jason Cosgriff said.
Papain was speaking with the officers on the side of the road when he suddenly hit the gas of his 2009 Ford Escape and sped off, the chief said.
Rather than pursue him, the officers watched as Papain turned onto Plesant Avenue, then followed him, Cosgriff said.

Garfield police pulled a clever sting to capture a Dominican national who they said pulled a knife on a 15-year-old boy and robbed him of a bicycle that the youngster had arranged to sell him through Facebook.
Cristopher Rosario, 18, of Bloomfield, met the boy in the parking lot of the Walmart on Passaic Street, then threatened him with a silver knife before fleeing on the bicycle towards Passaic shortly after 8:30 p.m. last Thursday, June 1, Capt. Mario Pozo said.
The youngster had gone there after Rosario agreed on Facebook Marketplace to buy the bike for $850, the captain said.

Ridgewood Bank Teller Flags ID Thief Trying To Cash $26,000 Check: Police
A Chinese national from Queens was arrested by Ridgewood police when he tried to cash a $26,000 check in another person's name with one of dozens of bogus IDs he was carrying, authorities said.
A teller at the East Ridgewood Avenue bank flagged down an officer Tuesday afternoon, May 23, while Lin X. Guan, 51, was still inside, Detective Capt. Forest Lyons said.
Police charged Guan with ID theft, trafficking personal information -- more than 50 items, with multiple victims -- and theft by unlawful taking.
