No Styrofoam Lunch Trays Allowed In Leonia Schools

LEONIA, N.J. — The Anna C. Scott Elementary School in Leonia will stop using Styrofoam cafeteria trays beginning Monday, Superintendent Joanne Megargee announced Tuesday.

The middle and high schools will switch to non-Styrofoam trays next school year.

The decision comes after lobbying by the Leonia Action Alliance, a grassroots community group dedicated to environmental, social justice and other progressive concerns.

The move would come ahead of a state bill currently awaiting review that would ban Styrofoam from all New Jersey public schools and colleges.

Leonia Action Alliance recently launched a campaign (see photo above) to make Leonia Styrofoam-free, following Jersey City, Secaucus and Rahway.

Styrofoam is not easily recyclable, does not biodegrade and is a health and environmental hazard.
