RAMAPO, N.Y. – A new academic program at SUNY Rockland Community College (RCC) is ready to provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a wide range of careers in healthcare, college officials said.

The community college is to offer a two-year Associate in Science degree in Public Health that is specifically designed to transfer to a four-year school where a bachelor’s degree can be completed in that field or another, similar area of study, according to the school.

The associate’s program curriculum includes core courses in public health along with the general academic classes required during the first two years at most any four-year college, according to RCC.

The degree, which is offered at SUNY Orange County Community College through the Hudson Valley Educational Consortium, is available online to students at RCC, officials said.

“Thanks to the steady job growth in the healthcare industry in our area, a Public Health degree is an excellent option for students interested in a healthcare career outside of direct patient care,” said Cliff L. Wood, RCC president, in a statement. “This program will help students build a broad base of healthcare knowledge and introduce them to a variety of healthcare careers.”

Such careers include work in state and local health departments, hospitals, workplace wellness programs and government agencies.
