A trooper with the New Jersey State Police, which was involved in the pursuit, said the agency was still assembling the details.
Sources said the chase began just around 4 p.m. on eastbound Route 46 in Elmwood Park, then went north on the Garden State Parkway to eastbound Route 80 to I-95.
Because of the increased speed, the locals dropped back as State Police picked up the chase in Fort Lee before the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police joined in when it reached them, a law enforcement source told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
New York State troopers were laying down spike strips at Exit 7 on the PIP when the driver suddenly tried to make a U-turn at Exit 6 — raising the possiblity that he had a scanner, the source said.
Instead, the car hit a police cruiser and a tree around 4:15 p.m. Officers then grabbed the driver, he said.
No injuries were reported.
