Referee collapses minutes into girls basketball game

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: “He just dropped,” a spectator at the Bergenfield/Fort Lee girls varsity basketball game at Fort Lee High School said after a young referee collapsed moments after tip-off. What was to have been the first game of the visitors’ 2010-2011 season was suspended until a new date can be scheduled.

An attendee told CLIFFVIEW PILOT that the referee dropped minutes into the Friday night’s game, after both teams had combined for no more than six points. And although someone raised the possibility of playing with one ref, the source said, it wasn’t a consideration.

Fort Lee Ambulance took the unidentified referee to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, police told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

It’s unclear whether the afflicted official worked the girls freshman game between the two schools, which tipped off shortly after 4 o’clock this afternoon, or the junior varsity game that followed.

Although their next game isn’t until Tuesday, the Bergenfield varsity girls are hosting a Hoops 4 Hope Challenge charity tournament at their high school on Sunday to raise money to help diagnose, treat, prevent and, hopefully, cure pancreatic cancer.
