Carmine Lombardi, a 43-year-old vehicle inspector from Elmwood Park, was behind the wheel of one of the vehicles that crashed at the corner of Lemoine Avenue and Bridge Plaza North shortly before 10 a.m. Thursday, Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said.
Lombardi took off, Grewal said, leaving the critically injured 57-year-old victim beneath the other car, which came to rest against the wall of a walk-in clinic.
The woman was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, where she was initially listed in critical condition but succumbed Thursday night to her injuries, the prosecutor said.
Charges against Lombardi were upgraded to leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle crash, Grewal said.
He remains free pending a Nov. 3 hearing in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, the prosecutor said.
