FORT LEE, N.J. -- Port Authority police Wednesday afternoon once again kept a suicidal person from jumping from the George Washington Bridge -- one of more than five dozen so far this year, authorities said.

A relative called the PAPD just after 2 p.m. saying that the 26-year-old Cedar Grove woman intended to kill herself, the authority's Joseph Pentangelo told Daily Voice.

An authority police officer reached the woman on her cellphone, and she agreed to meet at Fort Lee Historic Park, which overlooks the bridge, he said..

She was taken to Bergen Country Regional Medical Center in Paramus for further evaluation, Pentangelo said.

More than 10½ months into the year, nine people have jumped to their deaths from the span in 2016 -- exactly half of the total number for 2015, as well as the year before.

PAPD officers have had a little over 60 "interventions" at the GWB this year -- roughly one every five days.

In many cases they've talked people out of jumping, while in others they've grabbed or tackled those intent on going over the side.

Authority patrol officers have been undergoing special training in how to deal with would-be suicides.

On Tuesday, they grabbed an emotionally distraught Westchester man who shouted "Don't shoot me!" and then threatened to jump if they got any closer.

Last Thursday, they kept a distraught 17-year-old Teaneck girl from jumping.

Less than a week earlier,  they found a man headed for the span to jump in the same Fort Lee park as the woman on Wednesday. Like her, he was hospitalized.

Last month, officers tackled a suicidal 17-year-old Princeton University prep student -- who'd tried killing herself twice before -- as she ran to the GWB railing looking to jump. She, too, was taken to an area hospital.
