An officer spotted a white 2015 Acura headed toward New Jersey "speeding through a construction zone and crossing into other lanes several times without signaling" on the bridge at about 3:25 a.m. Sunday, the Port Authority's Joseph Pentangelo said.
The officer pulled over the driver -- identified as 47-year-old Hermogene A. Reynoso of Teaneck -- who smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech and told him that he'd “hit a car on the bridge” after drinking Hennessy, he said.
Police, who found no evidence of a crash, arrested Reynoso after he failed a field sobriety test and registered .13 on a breath analysis, Pentangelo said.
Around 9:15 a.m. Thursday, Port Authority police at the bridge received a call from a motorist whose Volkswagen was just struck by a 2008 BMW that fled the scene at 179 Street and Fort Washington Avenue.
The victim followed the other driver -- identified as Stephen C. Brecq, 50, of Closter -- who was pulled over by PAPD officers at the Palisades Parkway entrance in Fort Lee.
Brecq "was unsteady on his feet" and had bloodshot eyes and the odor of alcohol on his breath, Pentangelo said.
He failed a field sobriety test and registered a .15% BAC -- nearly twice the legal limit in New Jersey, he said.
Brecq was arrested and the BMW impounded.
Both he and Reynoso were charged with DWI and issued summonses.
