Officers who caught Elijah Myers, 33, of East Orange, manipulating the handicapped turnstile entrace without paying the fare ordered him off the train around 5:15 p.m. Monday, the authority's Joseph Pentangelo said.

Myers, in turn, refused to budge and "threatened to disarm an officer and shoot her," he said.

Officers tried removing Myers, Pentangelo said, but he began kicking and flailing -- so they sprayed him.

They later found him carrying a used crack pipe, he said.

Myers, who records show has a criminal history, also had outstanding warrants ouf of Newark and East Orange.

Last year, he was with a man who was struck and killed by a minivan in the Kearny Walmart parking lot. Myers sustained a broken wrist, police said at the time.

The driver was caused with death by auto while driving on the revoked list.

Myers remained held in the Essex County Jail early Wednesday, charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, eluding, theft of services, bail jumping and disorderly conduct.

EMS treated the officers at the scene, Pentangelo said.
