Posing as another girl of the same age, the Stevens Tech student “convinced the victim to take her top off and expose her breasts in front of her webcam” while recording it, state Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa said this afternoon.
The teen was shocked when Derringer turned the camera on himself, then threatened to post the recorded images online if she didn’t do as he told her, the attorney general said.
After ordering her to disrobe, Derringer, 24, “demanded that she touch herself in a sexual manner and assume various poses to better expose herself,” Chiesa said.
At the same time, he said, Derringer “masturbated and twice exposed his genitals to the girl via his webcam,” and “showed her several sexually explicit videos of other young girls.
“[H]e used deception, shame and fear to coerce a young girl into complying with his perverse demands,” Chiesa said.
Using her cellphone, the girl took a photo of her computer screen with Derringer’s face visible, the attorney general said.
Last Thursday, New Jersey State Police searched the Derringers’ 43th Street home, where they “found videos of incidents similar to that which the Minnesota girl reported to the police,” Chiesa said.
Yesterday, Union City police arrested Derringer and seized his laptop as he returned from a Florida trip.
Originally from South Florida, Derringer has been pursuing Stevens Tech’s new master of science degree in business intelligence and analytics.
He recently created a program that used algorithms to appraise home values based solely on public data, CLIFFVIEW PILOT has learned.
“This model can then be used to provide a quick appraisal for properties that are soon to be placed on the market as well as potentially find properties that are being offered at a discount to market value,” Derringer wrote of the project.
Derringer also praised the special grad program at Stevens: “It is a great blend of IT and business fields to transform a company’s data into market insight that allows the company to have an edge on the competition,” he told the school newspaper. “In addition, these skills can be applied to nearly any company or industry, offering great potential to all of those entering the field.”
Derringer was ordered held on $100,000 bail in the Hudson County Jail while prosecutors from the state Division of Criminal Justice Financial & Computer Crimes Bureau prepare a case based on an investigation by the NJSP’s Digital Technology Investigations Unit, led by Detective G. Michael Williams.
At this point, Derringer is charged with “causing a child to perform a prohibited sexual act knowing, having reason to know or intending that the act will be filmed or photographed” — as in: manufacturing child pornography. He’s also was charged with possession of kiddie porn.
Supervising Deputy Attorney General Kenneth Sharpe will present the case to a state grand jury, which could add other counts.
“Our investigation of this alleged offender is ongoing, and we urge any other potential victims from New Jersey or outside the state to contact us confidentially,” said Elie Honig, director of the N.J. Division of Criminal Justice.
