Witnesses "reported that they were walking in the park when they located the victim on the rocks on the north shore and drove to Fort Lee police headquarters to report the incident" just before 7 p.m. Monday, PIP Police Chief Michael Coppola said.
PIP officers and detectives joined Fort Lee police at the scene, he said.
"At this time, the circumstances surrounding the victim's death are under investigation," Coppola said late Monday. "However, we are seeking the public's assistance in positively identifying the victim.
He described her as black, with brown eyes and very short black hair, about 5-foot-5 and 200 to 225 pounds. She was wearing a dark gray hooded sweatshirt and a newer blue-colored Knicks T-shirt underneath, the chief said.
She'd been dead about 48 hours, but that doesn't mean that she wasn't missing longer than that, Coppola said.
He asked that anyone who knows her or saw her call Palisades Interstate Parkway Police at 201-768-6001 or MissingPersons@PIPPD.org. Reference case number: PI-16-6452.
