PALISADES PARK, N.J. – Palisades Park police arrested an Englewood construction worker whose alleged comments about killing anyone who publicly opposed President Trump ignited a panic at a local supermarket.

Kihwa Chung, 53, was charged with making terroristic threats, simple assault and causing a public disturbance, Police Chief Mark Jackson said Thursday. He was released pending a hearing.

Bergen County Regional SWAT team members and police from neighboring communities rushed to the ShopRite the night of Nov. 21 amid reports that customers had been threatened.

"Apparently some guy was going around the store saying he voted for Trump and wanted to kill people who spoke out against [the President]," a law enforcement source said at the time.

Unfortunately, someone who saw a SWAT team member posted on Facebook that a man carrying a rifle was in the store, fueling fear.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in the store evacuation.

“After police cleared the scene and made sure all patrons were safe, it became evident that the suspect had fled,” Jackson said. “Officers and the detective on scene confirmed this through [store] security footage.”

The ensuring investigation led to Chung, who was arrested Wednesday and has a Dec. 11 first appearance scheduled in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, the chief said.
