Melvin Lorenzo-Rivera, 22, of Elizabeth was trying to get into a locked door using a screwdriver early Sunday morning when Detective Joseph Bucco and Police Officer Charles-John Turro found him, Detective Capt. Martin Kahan said.

At first he told the officers he used to live there and returned to get some of his things, but the resident told them it wasn’t true, Kahn said.

Lorenzo-Rivera is being held on $2,500 bail, charged with burglary and possession of burglary tools, pending a hearing Wednesday in Municipal Court.
