The trio was supposedly giving the victim a lift to Englewood before noon Tuesday, he told police, when the driver suddenly turned down New York Avenue and they began beating him, demanding money, Capt. Patrick Kissane said.
The man managed to get out of the car, Kissane said, but the three "continued to assault the victim with fists and kicks" before he fled toward a nearby gas station.
The trio then sped off with his jacket, which contained the cash and phones, he said.
Officer Alejandro Lorenzo heard a description of the car in a broadcast alert and pulled it over -- with backup from Port Authority police -- on the upper level of the New York side, the captain said.
One of occupants threw a package out the window before the stop that Kissane said contained drugs.
The trio was being held at New York City Police Department Central Booking pending arraignment and extradition proceedings.
They were identified as the driver, Henry Britt Jr. 24, of the Hamilton Heights section of Manhattan; Malik A. Lee, 21, of Brooklyn; and Davonte Garcia, 21, of the Bronx.
All are charged with robbery.
