Several residents of the 13th Street building called headquarters around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to report a belligerent and possibly intoxicated man screaming and banging on apartment doors, Police Chief Benjamin Ramos told Daily Voice.

They became concerned after they tried but were unable to find the building owner, Edward Pec, 50, so they summoned the superintendent, Ramos said.

He let them into Pec's apartment, where they spotted the plants, he said.

The officers immediately backed out and notified detectives, who obtained a search warrant, the chief said.

Pec, meanwhile, had returned home and was taken into custody, he said. He was carrying a knife, Ramos said.

Pec was being held on $35,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail on various drug and weapons possession counts.
