ONLY ON CLIFFVIEW PILOT! Detectives watched as a convicted burglar cased homes in Teaneck and Englewood before he broke into two Bogota residences. They arrested him after he came out of the second house, cracking a three-town break-in spree, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said.

Amid a series of residential break-ins, task force detectives homed in on Jeffrey Whitaker, 46, an original member of the old “James Bond Gang” of burglars from Teaneck and Englewood, who terrorized North Jersey for several years, making their getaways in a customized BMW with secret drawers, halogen lights that blinded police and oil-spewing pipes.

The detectives were on Whitaker’s tail Thursday night when he entered one home through an open front door and then slipped into another through a rear sliding-glass door, Molinelli said. Both times, he walked out with a large amount of jewelry, the prosecutor said.

As detectives moved to cut off his path, Whitaker threw his car into drive, hitting a police car, before surrendering, Molinelli told CLIFFVIEWPILOT.COM.

In his car Whitaker had three pairs of gloves, a ski mask, two screwdrivers, and a large amount of jewelry from the Park Avenue homes, he said.

Searches of Whitaker’s car and home turned up pot, drug paraphernalia, and assorted jewelry believed taken in other break-ins, the prosecutor told the web site.

Molinelli expects more counts to follow in connection with other burglaries. But, for now, he said, Whitaker is charged with the two Bogota break-ins, four others in Teaneck and two in Englewood.

He’s being held on $30,000 in the Bergen County Jail.

Molinelli praised the assistance of police departments from Englewood, Teaneck, Fort Lee, Paramus, Bogota, Hillsdale and River Edge.
